antique sidelight from 1909 Art Glass Catalog

In 1909, in order to compete with poorly designed and poorly made decorative glass from mass merchandisers and unskilled builders, the National Ornamental Glass Manufacturers Association, now the Stained Glass Association of America, published a catalog of standard designs collected from among its members. Individual member studios then distributed this catalog under their own name and agreed to make the glass described in it for an established price and standard. This practice continued through several catalog editions in the early 1900s.

Patterns were selected by the homeowner and were custom built to the homeowner's own specific window dimensions. The sidelight shown here is pattern No. 270-N from the 1909 catalog. This sidelight panel was one of the more expensive designs and originally cost $2.40 per square foot to buy.

This panel came to us with lots of corrosion and broken glass. It was salvaged by our client from the home they grew up in to be restored by us and used in the entrance of their new home.
